Complete DIY Men’s Head Shell Casting Tutorial | Materials & Step-by-Step

To make a mold of your own head at home, so you can get a hairpiece that actually fits. No more buying pieces that slip, slide, or just look fake.

What You’ll Need

Plastic wrap (the wide kind),Packing tape (clear, wide tape),A permanent marker,Scissors

Step-by-Step

Wrap Your Head: Cover the bald/thinning area tightly with plastic wrap. Pull it snug, tie it under your chin. Make sure it's smooth on top, no wrinkles.

Tape It Up: This makes it stiff.

First, run strips of tape from one ear, over the top of your head, to the other ear. Do this until the whole area is covered.

Then, run strips from the front of your hairline to the back. Overlap the tape pieces a bit.

Press it all down so it becomes a hard shell.

Mark It Up:

Hairline: About 4 fingers above your eyebrows, draw where your new hairline should be. Follow the curve of your forehead.

Bald Spot: Draw the outline of the actual thin/bare area you want to cover.

Cowlick & Part: Mark the spot where your hair swirls (your "crown") and which way your hair naturally grows (forward, back, left, right).

Take it Off & Trim: Carefully peel the whole thing off your head. Use the scissors to cut off all the extra plastic wrap and tape around the edges. Now you have your custom mold.

Test Fit & Adjust: Slip the mold back on your head. Check if the edges sit right against your skin. Tweak it if you need to. Once it's perfect, you can mail this mold to a hairpiece company to get your piece made.

Pro Tips

Make the mold about 2 cm (a little less than an inch) wider than your bald spot on each side. This gives you room to clip the hairpiece into your real hair.

The best way to wear it; Glue the front, clip the back. It stays put and is easier to take on and off.
